The Church of Starry Wisdom is at the core of the plot, which takes place in Providence, Rhode Island. The cult summons a hideous being from the depths of time and space using an ancient artefact known as the Shining Trapezohedron. Professor Enoch Bowen found the Shining Trapezohedron in Egyptian ruins, in a box of alien creation, before returning to Providence, Rhode Island in 1844. By gazing into the glowing crystal, members of the Church of Starry Wisdom in Providence would awaken the Haunter of the Dark, an avatar of Nyarlathotep. This being could display other planets, universes, and the mysteries of arcane and paradoxical intelligence after being summoned from the black gulfs of chaos; however, he requested monstrous sacrifices, as shown by disfigured skeletons later discovered in the church. Light drove the Haunter of the Dark away, and he couldn't cross a lit field.
