Doctor Sophia Jackson is an Animal care specialist with a specialty in pets, trainer, vet tech, retired Dog Show Analyst, UKC, and MVT with over 25 years of experience. The first and most important things to train your dog are (1) To come when called, (2) Sit (3) to Stay, and (4) No. To teach your dog to come when called get a long lead and allow the dog to go to the end of it. Keep his best treat in one of your pocket. When the pet is the farthest from you call the dog by saying the word (COME HERE) and the dog's name. If the dog doesn't come/obey bring it to you by reeling in the lead, saying (CoMe here). When the dog is near you just say (good dog) and give it a treat. Repetition is required until the dog comes on the first call. Your pet will realize it will get a treat when it comes to you and henceforth it will learn what (COME HERE) means. And don't forget to scratch the dog's back or lots of petting and tell the dog (good dog). TO get a dog to sit, kindly use the same long lead and press down on the hindquarters saying sit. There would be a time when the dog will just want to play and run away, the only thing you have to do is to keep the lead in your hand. Repeat this until the dog gets an idea of what (Sit) means. Never forget to praise the dog when it does what you want it to. Immediately you master the come and the Sit signs, you can proceed with the Stay. Of course, it requires additional input/energy. To get the dog to stay you put the dog in the sit position and say STAY then walk away (let's say) a foot or two. When the dog moves - put the dog back into the sit position and say (Stay) at this time use the palm of your hand and open toward the dog and say stay. Have a repetition of this until the dog stays for at least a minute. You can progress in time for the dog to do a stay for a longer period, the choice is yours. The word NO must be used during the training. Should in case the dog walk away from you after it came to you as supposed, kindly say in a firm voice the word (NO) and come. This can be used also with the stay command. If it ignores or leaves the Sit position and stays, kindly say No Sit or NO Stay. Always praise your dog for doing what you required of it or asked. This obviously will make a better bond between you and your dog. Never under any circumstances use a Cain or HIT the dog. Use your initiative to apply verbalization, and/or Kind words for approval and firm words for disapproval GRAB YOUR COPY NOW TO HAVE COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY PROFESSIONAL GUIDELINES
