Adam has a family to provide for and protect and a business to run as the land of Israel becomes a boiling pot of unrest, and his son Augustus has a new wife and no job. Adam helps Augustus gain a lucrative assignment writing a manual for the growing, far-flung church, a book of the apostles' teachings that will help the church maintain common doctrine and practices. The two men go their separate ways before they can reconcile from their sharp disagreement about Christianity. Then the Jewish rebellion breaks out. Adam is caught up in it, while Augustus has traveled to Egypt for research and is far away from the fighting. He feels the pressure to complete the book when the war prevents him from rejoining his wife. Adam and most of the family encounter grave danger from the war. Both men lament that they are not together so they can reconcile. The Teachings is the story of Adam and Augustus in the midst of war, each fighting for family, each hoping to be reunited to work out their differences.
