The World through the Eyes of a Cop Eugene Matthews
The World through the Eyes of a Cop

There are many things in life that shape and define us, mold us, and harden or soften our perspectives of life. It's been said that there are three types of people who run towards a fight, Firefighters, Soldiers, and the Police. After seeing the worst and sometimes the best society has to offer, have you ever wondered, "what do they think, how do they feel?" Poetry, like many other forms of expression, reflect a poet's perspective and intentions. So, from the life-experiences of one who has run towards the fight I share these words and hope to inspire you the reader and motivate you to look at people, life, or the world with new eyes. Most would agree that every time a poem is read new insights can be gained, and when it's read aloud, something unique is happens to the reader and the listener. Whether whispered, spoken, or shouted poetry is meant to be shared. My work spans more than five decades of experiences, good, bad, and other...when words like duty, honor and loyalty were so common they were taken for granted. Being a cop is one of the most thankless jobs you'll ever love because it's much more than a job; it's a calling.
