Sydney McGuire is a senior in high school who's practically stumbling through life. Her father died in a car accident three years ago, her brother often leaves for college while her mother struggles with depression. All the while, Sydney has a limited social life, and she often suffers with nightmares when she's alone at night. Then, one day, she meets a young man named Connor - a fellow senior who seems to grow fond of Sydney rather quickly. But what she doesn't realize is that Connor is actually a magical being in disguise - a member of a race known as the Avalarians, who are survivors of a genocide that happened two centuries ago. The Avalarians, who are now on Earth, have a duty to protect humanity from a group of monsters called Terrars - evil monsters who feed off of the fear and despair of humans. When Sydney learns of Connor's true identity and befriends the Avalarians, her life begins to change forever... and she eventually learns that her role in the alien war is lot bigger, and more important, than she'll ever know.
