Jenny Ashbury is running for her life. Her casual boyfriend, Ivan Wiley, has become dangerously possessive and insanely jealous. He tells her that if she leaves, he will kill her. Jenny flees from her Florida home and disappears. She actually drives north and randomly picks the small Canadian town of Newbridge on Nova Scotia's South Shore. There she plans to crawl so deeply into a hole that Ivan can never find her. By chance she encounters Devon North, a handsome but taciturn man who is renovating the venerable Riverview Hotel. He is a great handyman but has poor people skills. In exchange for a free room, Jenny brings her experience in the hospitality industry and becomes indispensable at promoting the business. She takes up residence in the Captain's House behind the hotel and encounters two restless ghosts, the Captain and the beautiful nun, Maria D'Entremont. Their histories are slowly revealed and Jenny finds intrigue in her new and welcome home. But Ivan is obsessed with exacting his revenge.
