In AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, Gere plays a young man who's determined to prove his abusive, alcoholic father wrong by becoming a jet pilot in the navy. He remains steadfast in his goal, despite his sergeant making life unbearable for him and a romantic entanglement with a local girl.
In DAYS OF HEAVEN, Bill and Abby are a couple from Chicago who wind up living on the land of a wealthy but terminally ill farmer. Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer so that they can inherit his fortune.
