Cryin' the Blues Davis Coen
Cryin' the Blues
Davis Coen
Personnel: Davis Coen (vocals, guitar); Eric Von Schmidt (harmonica). This debut release by Davis Coen, done while still in his teens and produced by folk-music legend Eric Von Schmidt, whose 'Baby, Let Me Follow You Down' rendition was recorded by Bob Dylan on his 1962 debut release, was the first and only all-acoustic album of Coen's, which contains no drum or bass accompaniment. Von Schmidt, a grammy winner for album liner notes, scripted those also for 'Cryin' the Blues' and designed the cover- as well as played harmonica on two tracks. The album includes a selection of acoustic American roots styles ranging from traditional folk-blues with the likes of country blues legends Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House, to the much more Americana-flavored early Coen originals such as 'Long Lost Friend' (included in the 1999 movie 'Fresh Cut Grass' - featured on Showtime Channel), and the introspective and meandering 'Trouble in My Mind'.
