Chet Baker and Paris are two terms that, when combined, trigger enthusiasm in jazz lovers. The trumpeter with the melancholy sound and the city of love seemed made for each other when Baker recorded the first of a total of three albums there, all of which have long been considered classics. “Chet Baker And His Quintet With Bobby Jaspar” is a compilation of several sessions that took place between October 25, 1955 and February 10, 1956 at the Pathé-Magellan studio (Paris). Baker worked in various formations, including a quartet, a quintet and an octet, and also invited the Belgian tenor saxophonist Bobby Jaspar as a guest, so the content differs from his earlier recordings in Paris. However, it is a great work that gives us an insight into the various aspects of the legendary Baker sound. Samrecords.fr perfectly summarized the essence of the album: “With ordinary means, Chet managed to play phrases of extraordinary beauty with simplicity and clarity”.

To mark the 95th anniversary of Chet Baker, Universal Music Japan is presenting the legendary jazz legend's Paris recordings as high-resolution SHM-SACDs (non-hybrid). The limited Japanese imports were lovingly mastered from the original tapes, offering excellent sound quality of the mono recordings and revealing new facets of the ingenious US musician's playing. The legendary Paris recording sessions for Barclay all took place between 1955 and 1956, during Baker's first European tour.

Trumpet: Chet Baker  Tenor Saxophone: Armand Migiani (5, 6, 9), Bobby Jasper (1, 3), Jean-Louis Chautemps (7, 8) Baritone Saxophone: William Boucaya (5, 6, 9) Trombone: Benny Vasseur Piano: René Urtreger (5, 6, 9), Francy Boland (7, 8)  Bass: Jimmy Bond (5, 6, 9), Benoît Quersin (1, 2, 3, 4, 10) Drums: Jean-Louis Viale (1, 2, 3, 4, 10), Bert Dahlander (5, 6, 9) Conductor: Pierre Michelot (5, 6, 9)

This title is an SHM SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It allows a much better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized to DSD from the albums' master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L'Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning agents. - Please note: All titles are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collector's items for the Japanese market.
