Dannilynn Kelly is a very young--some might say immature--and previously very sheltered young woman who has just completed her first year at college away from home. Her first boyfriend turns out to be far less caring of Danni than she first imagined and when she discovers she's pregnant by him, no way will she  tell him. Instead, she starts a summer job intent on going back to college without having confided in her parents, either. But veterinary extern Ben Edwards' friendship becomes a mainstay, particularly after her father finds out and disowns her unless she agrees to give up the baby. Growing up quickly in the face of her continuing pregnancy and the birth of her son, Danni begins to think her life couldn't be better with Ben at her side, until the unthinkable happens.  Although each is in love with the other, neither Ben nor Dannilynn acknowledge their feelings for each other until a final crisis, precipitated by Danni's former boyfriend, that threatens Ben's externship and his future career as a veterinarian.
