Susan B. Anthony was one of the premier activists of the 19th century. Her early life was dedicated to the abolition of slavery in the United States and then she worked towards equal rights between men and women including the right to vote in public elections. Of course, she also worked towards equal rights between all races. With her dear friend Elizabeth Stanton she organized many other groups dedicated to social causes and especially feminism. Susan never married and lived her life dedicated to her causes. She was raised a Quaker and her parents were pacifists and staunchly anti-slavery. This background led to Susan being unafraid to take unpopular stances against prejudice and injustice of any sort. Possibly her greatest achievement was the passing of the 19th Amendment to the constitution, often called the Anthony Amendment giving equal rights to men and women, especially for voting. Before Susan B. Anthony, there really was not much of a feminist movement in the United States. She opened the doors to colleges and universities for women and to positions in professions. No longer were women's lives restricted to domestic duties in the home. She opened the doors to the cages that women had been held in up to that time.
