Almost 3 million people are in prison in the United States today. Add in those on parole, probation, or in local jails and the number rises to over 7 million. Most of them are there for non-violent crimes. And their sentences are getting longer. The punishment that they receive goes far beyond the simple loss of freedom. They experience countless "hidden punishments" during (and even after) their incarceration. As Catholics who believe in the value of human life, we are called to consider the plight of these millions of men and women. Our response must be one of mercy. We must find ways to alleviate their suffering, shorten their sentences and return them to the life that God has put them on this earth to live. Author M. D.
