Unable to outrun his past, Jay Palma, the most hated man ever to occupy the White House, faces a cataclysmic demise. In the aftermath, America and the world find themselves facing the abyss. The U. S. debt market has completely collapsed while the dollar and all other currencies not backed by gold have gone into free fall. Texas has suffered an inexplicable missile attack at the hands of the Chinese, with the apparent complicity of Washington DC, and declared its intent to leave the Union. In the wake of its own catastrophic losses in the Caribbean, a region now awash in radioactive fallout, China finds itself breaking into warring kingdoms as the communist north, the traditionalist west, and the capitalist south face off in imminent civil war. A victorious Iran has put a chokehold on Persian Gulf oil, threatening the economic lifeblood of Europe and Asia while trapping 60,000 American troops on Masirah Island to face starvation. A shattered U. S. military run by a Pentagon in disarray looks on helplessly, while the federal government overseeing it has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of the American people. Facing this impossible situation is an accidental president, a caretaker seemingly ill-equipped for the Herculean challenge. The restive states must be held together as a hastily called constitutional convention struggles to hammer out a new form of government acceptable to all. An immediate solution must be found to keep the dollar afloat long enough to contrive a replacement for it.
