In the fall of 2028, Jay Palma, the detested White House incumbent, is desperate for a second term and will commit any crime to attain it. With his popular running mate, Al Morse, absent from public view, Palma's rivals smell blood. Overseas, a hollowed-out U. S. military can no longer counter China and Iran, but no one in Washington seems to care. Beyond the Beltway and its self-centered jockeying, federal authority is under challenge by restive states sensing a coming collapse. Texas has launched its own gold-backed currency, creating a rival to the dollar as the Lone Star state edges towards secession. Against this grim backdrop, honorable and courageous people still exist, from soldiers preparing for deployment abroad to a compromised Secretary of the Treasury finding his integrity after losing it long ago.
